Movies Featuring Wines, Wineries and Wine Aficionados

A Good Year
I am an avid fan of Peter Mayle and feel fortunate that this book was made into a movie. If you are looking for a fun film that not only features wine but the south of France as well, this is it. It features Russell Crowe who plays an over stressed bond trader from London who reluctantly finds himself in Provence to dispose of his uncle's estate. An entertaining story unfolds from there. (If you typically "like to read the book before seeing the movie" here is a link to the novel, which I recommend as well).
Bottle Shock
Captures the story of the 1970s California wine industry when new world winemakers shocked the world at a now famous blind tasting in Paris. Well acclaimed, it is much more about the goings on in California at the time while not as much about the event itself. Incidentally, don't overlook the book about this event: Judgement of Paris
Sideways
Not exactly a feel-good buddy movie, but a buddy movie nonetheless. This one is edgy and not made for a light-hearted family film night. It was very popular, however, to the point it impacted the California wine industry. It reportedly led to an increase in consumption of Pinot Noir and a decrease in consumption of Merlot. View the film to see why. Based on a book.
Notorious
Am I giving away too much of the plot to categorize this film as a "wine movie"? Alfred Hitchcock, Ingrid Berman, Cary Grant, Claude Rains. Need I say more? Okay: American spy, German spy wring, love story, torn allegiances, post war Rio de Janeiro. Open a bottle of good red wine to savor with this great black and white film.
